With the exponential growth of "burden of treatment" of common retinal conditions, most notably but not limited to macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, tertiary care referral practices are facing difficult logistical scenarios. On one hand the trend in sharing the care of these patients with primary care providers is a natural progression. On the other hand, the paradigms of treatment of these condition are on a continuous change. In order for primary-care optometry to avoid any practice gaps, optometrist should stay abreast of these developments and formulate their practice patterns as when to manage, who and when to refer, and how to co-manage, posterior segment disease. To review current trends in management of common retina conditions such as but not limited to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion.
